When most people think of the 1910s, they imagine a time long ago filled with extravagant gowns, horse-drawn carriages, and polite conversation.
While all of those things were certainly present during that decade, there was one area in which the 1910s differed greatly from our current era: naming conventions for girls.

According to data from the Social Security Administration, the 10 most popular girl names in America in 1910 were Mary, Helen, Dorothy, Mildred, Jean, Ruth, Betty, Virginia, Francesca (or Frankie), and Josephine.
Compare that list to the top 10 girl names in America as of 2017: Emma, Olivia, Ava Grace (or Ava), Sophia Grace (or Sophia), Isabella Rose (or Bella), Emily Elizabeth (or Emmie), Abigail Mackenzie (Abby or Abbey), Charlotte Elisabeth (Lottie or Charli), Harper Lee (Hattie or Harper).
There are several notable differences between these two lists. First and foremost is the prevalence of biblical names in the 1910s list.
Names like Mary and Josephine were extremely popular at that time due to their religious associations.
Another big difference is the number of distinctly American names on the 2017 list.
Names like Harper and Charlotte have only become popular in recent years as parents look for unique names for their daughters.
